Driving in the dark poses additional risks and hazards that are not as common during the daytime. Drowsy driving and people who do not see well in low light cause many accidents in the dark.

Use your high beams when you are on a country road with no oncoming traffic. If you encounter an oncoming car, lower your high beams until they pass. Allow yourself the opportunity to see as much as possible. Be on the lookout for animals darting into your path.
Make an effort to remain alert
Take steps to keep yourself awake and alert when driving at night, especially on long drives. Even if you are not tired when you begin a drive, it is easy for the darkness to lull you into drowsiness. Drink caffeine, play engaging music or listen to an interesting podcast.
While these tips will help you drive safer at night, if you have poor night vision or struggle with the glare of streetlights and oncoming headlights, it is wise to avoid driving after sunset or before sunrise whenever possible. Adjust the time of your trips so that you are as safe and confident as possible on the road.
